Earth’s molten outer core lies about 2200 km below the surface. As this electrically conducting liquid iron moves, it helps generate the planet’s geomagnetic field. For many years, scientists studying small variations in that field concluded that much of the outer core was flowing mainly westward.

That pattern changed dramatically in 2010. Beneath the Pacific Ocean, a large region of molten material began moving strongly eastward instead of continuing its weaker westward flow. Scientists still do not know what caused the reversal.

Satellite observations, including measurements from ESA’s Swarm and CryoSat missions, have now allowed researchers to study the event in greater detail.

Published in the Journal of Studies of Earth’s Deep Interior, the study combines ground-based observations with satellite measurements collected from 1997 through 2025. The researchers used data from ESA’s Swarm and Cryosat missions, along with observations from Germany’s CHAMP mission and the Ørsted mission.

Their analysis showed that a broad area of iron-rich fluid below the equatorial Pacific shifted from a weak westward flow to a strong eastward flow in 2010.

Scientists had generally viewed large-scale circulation in the outer core as relatively stable. The sudden change beneath the Pacific suggests that the system can vary much more quickly than previously believed. The findings offer new clues about the turbulent motions responsible for producing Earth’s magnetic field. They may also point to connections between activity in the outer core and changes taking place even deeper inside the planet.

    It (the core) DID NOT “reverse directions”. It was spinning slightly faster than the crust, now it’s spinning slightly slower.

    This specific small section is flowing eastward instead of westward, which is faster, so the title directly contradicts both the old news about the core and this specific news they go on to half-describe in the article.

    FFS, this kind of irresponsible “journalism” is half the reason people are so misinformed on things. Clickbait is garbage, especially about science.

      shrugs The nice thing about open access papers is I can (and always do) link to them when available so you can just go read the introduction and conclusion/discussion of paper for yourself, or read the “popular science” article take on it, or both! Your choice! While I would say this headline is definitely clickbait grabby, there is fascinating science behind it so I find it hard to get upset at in this case.

      Also not to be obnoxiously semantic about the physics, but the only thing that isn’t just a question of perspective here is acceleration not velocity. It is valid from a perspective of constant rotation to observe an object slowing down in its rotation with respect to you and conclude it is changing directions, the only absolute thing that can be said here is to quantify the degree and orientation of acceleration… but I get the spirit of your point and focusing on this detail is kind of missing the broader point of what you are saying I realize that.

      I editorialized the headline a tiny bit to add some context to reduce the “THE EARTH HAS CHANGED DIRECTIONS” headline grabby feel because you are right.

    Haven’t we known for a while now that the magnetic field changes regularly? And if the magnet field is generated by the spinning of the core, it would make sense that something happened to the core rotation regularly.

      I don’t really know the specifics but yes, it does occasionally change, you can see evidence of this in minerals that formed in rocks that were sensitive to magnetic fields resulting in orientations that using geological context could be used to established the direction of the magnetic field.

      This is about the specific granular flows of magma near the surface though, we aren’t talking about a global unified shift but rather a study that reveals that magma flows beneath the crust are much more localized, dynamic and unique to their idiosyncrasies than the picture had suggested before.
