As demand soars, the country’s mangrove forests and the livelihoods of shellfish gatherers are under threat from encroaching farms and unchecked pollution
could it not be both? obv profits drive the desire to sell more shrimp but at the same time if you know slaves are processing your “good food” would you not feel some moral responsibility to not consume it or at least attempt to find more humane alternatives?
Generally a good rule of thumb is: if the product is an animal, atrocities were committed. It’s not a perfect rule, there are some plant-based products that involve their own atrocities (coffee and chocolate and other tropical plants come to mind) but it’s a good shorthand. You simply can’t mass produce animal products at affordable prices without atrocities.
Is it really the appetite? People liking good food is causing this? How about a voracious appetite for profits.

Sure but how can anyone possibly be informed about all the atrocities being committed for various products in a supermarket. There’s too many 😭
