It hasn’t happened this time, but all it takes is a heat dome to persist for a few hours or days with 10-20% higher humidity &/or temp and BAM… thousands to millions dead. Once evaporative cooling reverses and you start absorbing heat from the atmosphere it’s only a matter of time. So maybe the next El Nino, or the one after; possibly in between, but less likely.

The embellishment with the ministry for the future is the first wet bulb event was extreme, when in reality they’re most likely to start smaller and less intense — only killing thousands — not reaching those types of extremes until we’re at 2-3c (in decades). The resilience of the bioshpere, and slow crawl of climate change, is what is ultimately leading to our undoing.

You’re thinking of conservatives. The cruelty isn’t the point with the chamber of commerce. Profits are the point. Anything that benefits the worker reduces profits for the capitalist.

Take Raleigh as an example. In 2012 … Raleigh’s coldest winter temperature was somewhere between 5 and 10 degrees Fahrenheit on average.

Now, the lowest winter temperature is between 10 and 15 degrees Fahrenheit on average.

That’s a huge shift for a decade. I wouldn’t really call it “super neat” when it’s a strong indicator that the imminent climate catastrophe will be much worse than expected.

This is irrelevant due to Jevons paradox. That’s why we’re still burning peak fossil fuels, have released 25% of all GHG’s this century, and will release another 25% before 2030 2040. All renewables to date have only been additional energy sources; they will not reduce fossil fuel consumption until we’ve already solidified 3-4c (especially given how energy intensive robotics and AI will prove to be).

The ONLY way humanity stops burning fossil fuels is if the people rise up en mass and FORCE their governments and corporations to keep the fossils in the ground, and everyone accepts that we have to pay more for a lower standard of living. That is about as likely as capitalism collectively choosing to stop wasteful consumption… So just enjoy the ride until the collapse. The entirety of human civilization will only ever commit to shuffling deck chairs on the titantic. The only circumstances powerful enough to change that are a meteor, supervolcano, highly fatal epidemic, nuclear war, etc. Luckily fossil fuelled warming will cull the herd for us within the next 50-100 years.
