It is important to not plant things outside of their native range. However, plants and animals do not exist only for food. They exist so they should continue to and should be helped, not as something useful for creatures but because they should and because they help life no matter whether they are seemingly immediately useful for creatures or not.
We recently learned that some of the rocks they want to mine provide some of the oxygen for this planet. This shouldn’t be done for many reasons, but if you need a selfish one then less oxygen seems like good reason to not mine.
Well, the thing is, it could make it easier but not whilst under those who want to control with it.
Technology is not inherently bad or good, it is a tool and like all tools, those who design and make it can do so for more control or less control.
If technology was truly in the hands of the people, everything was open source, changeable and collaborative then it would make our lives better.
Currently it can’t and won’t in all ways.
Whilst I don’t think we could ban it if we wanted to, I do think that a focus less on either commercialising social media or commercial social media in general with their algorithms etc would be better for people’s mental health.
That is not to say that non commercial social is better inherently, it is all about the attitude people come to it with, getting away from the virality, fame and poorly thought out opinions and misinformation, working on bigotries and self esteem and developing community and genuine friendship with a diverse array of people would create a better social media and world in general.
Sadly not even the fediverse is at all close to that yet, perhaps it will be one day, but there are still so many folks with ideas around what social media should be for that they haven’t dropped their ideas that make it untennable and unbearable, they also haven’t let go of a lot of their bigotries and don’t listen when told otherwise, that and even with the best of intentions it can still create low self-esteem with edited media or people only showing you their ‘best’ sides, even without algorithms.
Social media should be about improving the world and ourselves, but it has a long way to go to create that mindset and to reward it, even the fediverse.
Sorry, I cannot bring myself to watch the video considering what I know.

She helped an abuser (the person who used to run the We’re in Hell channel: Sam) ‘negotiate’ with their victim (Sam’s partner at the time) and she did something against someone’s consent (she put a cigarette out on them), which is a repeating pattern for her.
