This will probably require soldering, and will definitely require opening the case. A picture of the trimmer with any visible screws shown will help to determine how feasible this is. You will require some solder, a soldering iron, and some flux. If you haven’t done soldering before, this could be the most forgiving project to learn it on. Electrical soldering is pretty easy, electronics are fairly precise.

On the face of it, your point is valid, just like on the face of it landing rockets is too complicated. Both are likely solved the same way - active management by responsive computers to negate environmental effects to behave in a stable manner in an unstable environment. This idea certainly wouldn’t have worked 100 or even 50 years ago, but may be quite possible now.

The reason we haven’t seen a lot of results in fusion research is mostly because we haven’t spent a lot on it. Here’s A Slashdot article from a long time ago. The spending chart hasn’t changed much until about the last decade, where we’ve finally seen some advances.

Natron Energy, the American sodium battery manufacturer, is only talking about making EV fast chargers, not actual EV batteries. I’m guessing the big reason is energy density. I’m not sure what the range of the Chinese EVs are, but I suspect it won’t be enough to attract North American consumers at this time, although I expect that will change. Also, in other locations where the population density is higher, lower range probably isn’t as big of a factor.

It will be a while for sodium batteries to solve this problem. They have low energy density, both by weight and volume. I expect it to change enough to be a better choice relatively soon. In the meantime, lithium recycling is picking up, which will reduce the burden of the increased demand for lithium.

If you just burned fossil fuel to generate electricity instead of using gas or diesel, you would still have a net reduction in emissions simply due to the net efficiency difference between large power generators and ICEs. Also, much of that pollution wouldn’t be where as many people are living, which would have health benefits. All this ignores cleaner power generation options.

Sure non-car options are superior where they’re feasible and should definitely be looked at. But for a lot of places and people, that isn’t an option now, and won’t be for another 10 years. So maybe we should think about ways to get there without literally setting the world on fire.

And also that advanced materials science is hard. Yes, there will be a lot of apparent dead ends as well as a lot of dead ends that lead to new paths of research when coupled with as-yet unperformed research. It may be cool to say, “Yet another piece of research that won’t leave the lab,” but all comments like that (and the upvotes they receive) indicate is the complete lack of understanding those users have about the field in question.

Battery technology is changing all the time, but it’s only highly visible when we switch fundamental systems. NiMH batteries had a number of improvements that increased energy density and charge cycles, but most users only saw they were NiMH batteries. The same applies to Li-ion batteries. Overall, rechargeable batteries have gotten 6 to 10 times as energy dense and cost has been reduced to about 5% per Ah over the last 30 years. This didn’t happen because research wasn’t leaving the lab.
